PR & AI search · Specialty materials manufacturer (anonymized)
From conference paper to the source AI cites.
A U.S. specialty materials manufacturer introduced a new design framework at its industry's annual conference. Sixteen days after we released the story, the company's own press was driving the AI answers about it on every engine we checked.

Day 16
The engagement
One story, released once, sent everywhere AI engines look.
The client
A decades-old U.S. maker of specialty materials that go into other companies' products: foams, insulation, coatings and adhesives. One plant in a small Midwestern city. Its marketing and sales director runs marketing himself, with no agency and no PR history.
The challenge
The company was about to present a technical paper introducing a named framework for more sustainable materials, with one concrete result editors could headline. Its buyers now ask ChatGPT and Google which supplier to call. But nothing about the framework existed anywhere an AI engine could read: no press, no outside coverage, no clear page on the company's own site. Whoever published first would own the answer.
What we did
- 01
Found the angle editors would run. The paper had a dozen claims. The release led with the one a trade editor could headline: a drop-in replacement for a regulated ingredient at equal performance. The framework name came second.
- 02
Wrote and distributed the release. Sent over a newswire eight days before the presentation, so coverage was live when the audience went looking.
- 03
Pitched editors from the client's own inbox. We built a tiered list of trade editors across the three industries the company's customers read and wrote the note. The client sent it, so editors heard from the source, not an agency.
- 04
Added a hometown angle. A separate list and message for local media, built on the plant's long history in its city, produced an on-site interview.
- 05
Built the press room the same morning. A press page on the client's site gave every pickup a source to link back to, with coverage logos added as placements landed.
- 06
Turned coverage into citations. Two clear, AI-readable articles went up on the client's site over the next two weeks, so the engines had a first-hand source to pair with the outside coverage.
- 07
Checked what the engines actually cite. We ran the framework and its category questions through each major AI engine and traced the sources behind every answer.
Results
- Day 1
Two trade publications ran the story, one with its own angle on the formulation result.
- Days 2–3
Two more trade titles published, including the top-tier publication in the niche. Regional dailies in two states carried the release. Editors started contacting the client directly.
- Week 1
A local outlet interviewed the team at the plant. It ran as an article and a live TV segment.
- Day 16
Our citation check found the client's own press driving the AI answers about the framework on every major engine tested. Search the framework's name and the company owns the result.
No paid placements and no ad spend. One release, one editor list, one press page, two articles.
"It seems that we are in more news websites. We feel very excited with the results. Thanks a lot for your great work."
"A wire release on its own gets syndicated and ignored. The difference here was sequencing: the angle an editor would actually run, sent from the client's own inbox, with a press page and articles ready for the engines to read. That is why the company is the cited source two weeks later, not a footnote."
What this means for manufacturers
Your buyers ask AI before they ask you, and the engines answer from trade press, regional news and your own pages. A conference paper, a product launch or a plant milestone is enough raw material. The work is connecting the release, the editors, the local angle and your site into one sequence, then checking what the engines cite. See our AI search consulting.
